Tradition

The mild climate, fertile soil and maritime connections have contributed to the rise of a rich gastronomic tradition.

The typical gastronomy of Almada is particularly linked to the sea and its products for two reasons. First, the obvious proximity to the Atlantic. But second, and not least, are the cultural roots of the inhabitants of Costa de Caparica.

The region can boast a wide variety of dishes, due to its proximity to the ocean and the long established fishing industry, it is not surprising that fresh fish and shellfish exist in abundance, thus giving rise to many well-known local specialties including delicious Fish stew.

Specialties

A long and proud history of wine production has resulted in some excellent regional wines, especially those from the Palmela area.

Other specialties in the region include cheese, with the variety of the excellent sheep's milk from Azeitão, which deserves a special mention, sausages produced in various forms, and many cakes and sweets, a legacy of the conventual heritage of the area, monks
